Computer clusters 040, 042, 046 and study clusters 030 and 038 are now equipped with Salto locks. Please see Facilities & Operations' General Information for more details.

Cluster Software

SPIA clusters have the same software that is installed on the Office of Information Technology’s cluster computers.

In addition, all computers in SPIA Cluster Room 046 have ArcGIS 10 installed. These computers are located along the wall beneath the shelving.

The SPIA computer clusters are provided for the general use of SPIA faculty and students and we cannot change the configuration of the machines for individual use. However, requests that are received throughout the year will be considered for the next software rollout, which is typically in the fall.

Cluster Policies

Computer clusters are available for SPIA students in Robertson rooms 040, 042 and 046. All have Dell computers operating on Windows 10: Room 040 has 13, Room 042 has 11, and Room 046 has 12. Room 046 has a stand-alone monitor, keyboard and mouse package for connection to a personal laptop. All rooms have two printers with print-release stations. The clusters are open to all students 24 hours a day, seven days a week; however, they may be reserved for classes at certain times during the semester. Please check the schedules that are posted outside the rooms for those times.

Please observe the following when using the clusters:

  • Room 042 has been designated a quiet cluster. Please use Room 046 for group projects.

  • All SPIA students are expected to familiarize themselves with the University's Rights, Rules, Responsibilities publication and to adhere to the University's Guidelines for Use of Technology Resources.

  • The clusters are for the exclusive use of SPIA students and SPIA classes and are kept locked. Anyone who has the right to use the clusters can use their Princeton ID card to unlock the door. Please do not leave the doors propped open, or open the door for strangers. If a person you do not recognize as a SPIA student is demanding entrance to the cluster or is occupying a PC, please do not confront them. Use a campus phone to call the Princeton University Police at 911 immediately and ask for assistance.

  • Food and drink are not permitted in the clusters.

  • Do not leave personal belongings, particularly laptop computers, purses, backpacks and briefcases unattended in the clusters. Thefts have occurred.

  • Please do not change the desktops, install your own software or store your files on cluster PCs. You risk having your work deleted. All students have secure file storage space on University systems. For more information on accessing your personal file storage space please see KnowledgeBase #5286.

  • The cluster PCs are available to all SPIA students and are heavily used during the school year. Please do not attempt to claim a particular PC as your own. When you are finished working, exit all open programs and remove your books, papers and other personal belongings from the area.

  • In order to provide computer access for all SPIA students, the PCs are now programmed to log users off automatically if the keyboard detects no activity for 20 minutes. If you leave a PC unattended and your session is automatically closed, you will be considered to have finished your session, and another student may move your belongings and begin working at that PC.

  • Report problems with cluster computers and printers to the SPIA Help Desk (spiahelp@princeton.edu) or 258-1773. The Help Desk hours of operation are M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you call at other times, your call will be switched to voice mail. Please leave a message.

Cluster Printing

To avoid wasting paper, SPIA has implemented a print accounting system called Papercut, facilitated by the Office of Information Technology.

When you print to a Papercut-managed queue, the document will not automatically come out of the printer. You must “release” the job by using the computer labeled PRINT RELEASE STATION, which is located next to the printer you want to use.n This system has been installed in all the SPIA clusters.

To view step-by-step instructions please see OIT’s KnowledgeBase article.

SPIA Printers

SPIA cluster printers use the OIT All_Clusters queue. Please see OIT’s KnowledgeBase article to configure your personal computer.

To install carrel printers, follow instructions in the related OIT KnowledgeBase article.

  • Location: Robertson 040, 042, 046

  • Printer Model: HP M605

  • Queue: \\ssprint-prod1\PawPrint or PawPrintColor

Color printing service for students are available in Frist 300, the Lewis Library and from the Office of Printing and Mailing. Please see OIT's news and KnowledgeBase articles for details.

SPIA Cluster printers are configured to print duplex (double-sided). If you want to print single-sided, you must change the settings in Printer Properties in the Print dialog box, or in the Printer Properties in the Printers and Faxes control-panel applet.

Students may change toner cartridges. If there are no cartridges in the cluster, please notify the SPIA Help Desk (spiahelp@princeton.edu).
